What is your idea of a Team?


Most of us would think a team is a group comprising more than 1 person who come together or working together to achieve a goal. A group does not necessarily constitute a team. Teams normally have members with complementary skills and generate synergy through a coordinated effort which allows each member to maximise their strengths and minimise their weaknesses.


As an author and someone who also believes in good team dynamics, she have belonged in various types of small teams and a group team, where a big project team as big as 300 sales persons or more are sub-divided into smaller groups with familiar or unfamiliar faces, a simple analogy, because that’s where writer’s business started, a new residential project launch, where there are planned outdoor and indoor planned marketing and sales activities, the more common ones of late are mobile roadshows, door knocking in public and landed housing estates, flyer distribution and telemarketing.


Otherwise, some may prefer to work on their own, doing their own reach of marketing and advertising to reach to a broader demographic by engaging in Facebook and digital marketing, both are effective depends on one’s budget, goals and objectives.


Writer has often combined both, within what is a reasonable fit and budget.  There are times when it is difficult to integrate within a team who may already have a relationship build or may not want to share ‘their secret strategy” , hence often times, writer has to do much work on her own, after all, at the end of the day , we go back to the basics of when we first started, did we arrive as a team, or was a team built along the way, and there are many who basically work in just pairs or at the end alone and together.


And there are teams who will go all the way for each other no matter what happens, and there are teams that drift apart in time, due to partnership issues or even poor leadership, hence, a big team can split and go different ways, and that’s where they forge with others and form a different group and synergize again, and at the end of the day, realistically we go back to our homes alone or if a couple or an individual, nothing lasts forever, or some will say, change is constant and nothing is cast in stone, based on writer’s personal experience, a team or group whom we thought we trusted, turns out otherwise , ugly and complicated by people with their own personal agendas, and in our industry, it is a sad fact of life, even a husband and wife relationship, can go stale, if not upheld with trust, honesty and sanctity, likewise a partnership and team dynamics relationship.


A story I recalled being told many many years ago, my own late grand father, who she was told was an entrepreneur in rubber and other commodity  and because of a business relationship gone bad, lost lots of money, and business partnership issue, writer didn’t get to meet or see him (in picture only), as he passed away at an early age in his late 40′s.


Author is a believer in starting a relationship especially business work relationship with our clients, colleagues and business associates, and even an agency, it has to start with a simple level trust, honesty and openness to make it work, it’s what’s kicks it off and stays, hopefully, along the way things may go awry, but it is always the start that is most important including working principles and communication.
